Sydney 2000 British Sailing Team Selection Trials

Festive racing brings smiles for Welwyn Garden City Sailing Club

Welwyn Garden City Sailing Club's Christmas races went ahead in spite of a dismal forecast and the crews enjoyed some tough yet battles in the dry conditions. There was a festive element too as most were dressed in seasonal outfits and although the conditions were very different for the two races the first three were the same. Alan Campbell and Annette Walter each took a first and a second while Patrick Rohart claimed two third places. They shared the traditional prizes of Christmas puddings. Another went to Alex Shelley who was second in the Slow Fleet, despite taking a penalty for hitting a mark in a big gust. It was another unexpected gust in an otherwise steady wind that put Paul Lohr in the water. He retired to make an early start on the hot mince pies and punch that are served annually at the event. One final winner was Mike Caddy who took the best costume prize for his full Santa Claus garb.

Salterns Sailing Club launch dinghy for Olivia Inspires

The memory of Olivia Burt is honoured with the launch of a new dinghy at Lymington's sailing club for children, where she learnt to sail Paula and Nigel Burt with Commodore Freya Baddeley at Salterns Sailing ClubIn November, Salterns Sailing Club welcomed Paula and Nigel Burt for the launch of a new dinghy named in memory of their daughter Olivia who was killed in a tragic accident whilst studying at Durham University in February 2018. The 'Olivia Inspires' RS Tera will join the fleet at Salterns, Lymington's sailing club for children that is run by children, and is named after the charity ‘Olivia Inspires’ that has been set up to enable the spirit of Olivia to live on by helping young people in the New Forest to realise their potential. Speaking to members of Salterns Sailing Club on the pontoon, Nigel Burt said: "Olivia started sailing at Salterns Sailing Club when she was just 5 years old and she absolutely loved it, doing all the Moppy Camps and sailing in an oppie. Olivia loved her sailing and got so much out of it, moving from optimists to lasers and ultimately she was doing team racing at Durham when the tragedy happened. Out of that tragedy we really want to make something positive happen, which is why we have set up Olivia Inspires to help young people in the New Forest. Olivia was the sort of person who took up every opportunity that was going. If there's a message to give to you youngsters, it is that if you see an opportunity, grab it with both hands. Opportunities don't come along all the time, take every opportunity and make the most out of your life. Good luck to all of you and enjoy sailing Olivia Inspires." Olivia Inspires Tera Members of the Junior Committee then read out Neptune's boat launch speech, wishing good luck and safe voyage, with offerings made to the North, East, South and West, before launching the 'Olivia Inspires' Tera into Eight Acre Pond. Commodore Freya Baddeley (aged 16) presented a framed tribute to the Club. "Before heading to university, Olivia attended Bournemouth School for Girls, where I remember her as a kind, talented and inspirational Head Girl. Many of the Junior Committee also remember her helping out at Salterns, she was kind, helpful and clearly loved sailing. I hope through this Tera, named in her honour, that Olivia’s memory will live on at Salterns Sailing Club for many years to come." Salterns Sailing Club have also awarded Olivia posthumously with a Salterns Gold Pennant, in recognition of her sailing achievements. Olivia represented Great Britain at the European Laser 4.7 Youth Championships in the Netherlands in 2011 and at the Laser Radial Youth European Championships in Denmark in 2014. Welsh sailing charity scoops international award

The Challenge Wales charity which operates the sail training vessels Challenge Wales | Wales Tall Ship and Adventure Wales won the award due to the work it has done during 2019 with hundreds of disadvantaged young people, helping them to develop their employability skills. The charity is only the third UK recipient of the Award since the awards started in 2007. The predominantly volunteer-run charity provides social and personal development training for those aged 12 – 25 years. It has worked with homeless/risk of homeless young people as well as young carers, those in the care system, young people with learning difficulties, LGBTQ groups, college and school pupils and those who are financially disadvantaged through unemployment or lack of opportunities. The charity has also developed Agored Cymru accredited learning, undertaken onboard, giving young people something tangible for their CV. Paul Bishop, Head of Race Directorate at Sail Training International said, “This has been a great year for Challenge Wales and they have been an inspiration to all of us involved in Sail Training. “They have worked with hundreds of young people from diverse backgrounds, offering unique and inclusive sail training programmes. “Challenge Wales made a terrific contribution to The Tall Ships Races and a real difference to the young people who participated, encouraging international friendship and cultural understanding. “Challenge Wales engages in remarkable youth development, which demonstrates innovation, best practice and delivering excellence – which is why they are so deserving of the Sail Training Organisation of the Year Award.” Challenge Wales Trustee Vicky Williams said, “Winning this award, in our tenth year of operating, is an amazing accolade to our volunteers, supporters and team. “We’ve had some amazing results getting young people back into employment, volunteering or education and through independent evaluation our sail training programme has been evidenced to show that it has a positive impact on young people’s mental health and wellbeing as well as developing their life skills. “Sail Training is a great leveller and challenges the individual. Our programme also adapts with us and this year we raised awareness of sustainability and one-use plastic issues and its impact on the ocean. “It is great that our work is being recognised within the industry and at an international level.” Challenge Wales has an exciting sail training programme planned for 2020 that young people and groups can be part of, with bursary funding available to support many young people aged 12 – 25 years.
