PRADA Cup Day 1 Highlights

Harbour authority to headline sponsor the Falmouth Classics yacht race

Falmouth Harbour have been announced as the headline sponsor of this year’s Falmouth Classics yacht race. The announcement comes as the port authority is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year. Falmouth Classics, with 190 or more participating vessels since 2017, is one of the largest heritage and classic events in the UK. The event will take place in June, in Falmouth, Cornwall, Covid-19 restrictions permitting. It will showcase classic and heritage craft during the period Falmouth hosts the G7 media camp. Participants will have the opportunity to participate in three races and the parades. Falmouth Harbour chief executive officer, Miles Carden, said: “In this important year of celebration for the Harbour and through our marina Falmouth Haven we are excited to announce our support, to the largest heritage and classics sailing event in the UK. “We are really excited to increase our support to the event in 2021 in the Harbour’s milestone year. Falmouth Classics is now an important part of the Harbour’s culture and will bring a much needed economic boost to the town in 2021.” He added: “We look forward to working closely with the Classics team to ensure a great event, which will provide an incredible backdrop as we welcome the world’s press to Falmouth as a part of the G7 conference.” Classic Yacht racing in Carrick Roads during the Falmouth Classics in 2019 (Image: Doug Jackson Photography) To recognise the 150th anniversary of the Harbour Falmouth Classics Association is planning a spectacular parade of sail and power on Sunday June 13. A Royal Navy vessel is expected to lead the parade from Trefusis Point off Falmouth Docks, towards Black Rock, followed by a flotilla of harbour vessels, led by one of the Falmouth Harbour pilot boats. Behind the modern port craft , a fleet of sailing pilot cutters, some original and some modern recreations and other vessels relevant to the port’s past will follow. Keith Tullett, chairman of Falmouth Classics Association, said: “The Association very much appreciates the increased support that the Falmouth Harbour Commissioners (FHC) and Falmouth Haven will bring to the 2021 event. The volunteer team looks forward to recognising FHC’s achievement during the event. "The expected fleet should ensure a wonderful vista in the harbour recreating Falmouth’s past.” The Falmouth Classics will take place from June 11-13 with vessels arriving on June 10.

Young Jess from Rugby is sailing to success

A chance meeting with the British Olympic sailing team when she was six sparked a love for sailing which has seen young Rugbeian Jess Powell win rafts of awards. At eight years old Jess passed her preliminary qualifications and joined Draycote Water Sailing Club. She then completed her advanced training a year later and her competition-winning skills have seen her pass selection for the British Youth Sailing Squad Regional Training Group – the first step on the path to becoming an Olympic sailor. Parents Donna and Mike said they extremely proud of Jess’s determination. Lockdown has not stopped Jess, she has been working on her fitness and honing her skills at home. The family said they would like to give their thanks to the Draycote sailing club for their support.

Norfolk Club Receives Prestigious Broads Award

Horning Sailing Club, an RYA Training Centre, OnBoard and Sailability Club based on the Norfolk Broads, was recently awarded the Martin Broom Memorial Trophy for ‘Outstanding Contribution to Broads Boating’ by the Norfolk and Suffolk Boating Association (NSBA). Given the current circumstances, the presentation has been unable to take place in person, but instead took place virtually at the NSBA’s AGM last month. NSBA Chairman Ben Falat outlined the Club’s achievements, including their efforts in organising the Three Rivers Race for sixty years, and the popular RYA Training Centre which has not only brought hundreds of young people and adults onto the water, but also sees as many as thirty volunteer instructors out on the water at any one time. Club Commodore Holly Hancock said: “We are thrilled to accept this award on behalf of the members of Horning Sailing Club. Horning is entirely volunteer run, and it’s thanks to the fantastic efforts of these volunteers that the Club’s activities take place – from training children and adults to the Three Rivers Race, being part of the Horning Boat Show to racing. Nothing would be possible without the dedication and hard work of the Club’s volunteers, and we are so pleased that their contributions have been valued in this way. Like many other clubs, we’ve had a really tough year – so this is an incredibly welcome boost to morale. The Club is looking forward to continuing an exciting year, by exhibiting at the very first virtual RYA Dinghy Show later this month (on 27/28 February) and celebrating the 60th Three Rivers Race later in the season.” The Martin Broom Memorial Trophy has been awarded annually since 2014, established to honour the memory of Martin Broom MBE, a familiar name both locally and further afield – as someone who made a lasting contribution to all aspects of boating on the Broads. Previous winners include the Nancy Oldfield Trust, Broadsbeat, and Waveney Sailability. The trophy presentation will take place once it is permitted to do so.
