Golden Horizon sails into UK ahead of revised debut sailings

Tradewind Voyages sailing ship Golden Horizon has arrived in the UK ahead of a revised schedule of coastal voyages.

The 272-passenger vessel arrived into Portland in Dorset on Thursday.

The world’s largest tall ship will sail with a limited capacity of 136 due to government restrictions.

Golden Horizon will spend three days in Portland before being anchored in Weymouth Bay for three days and returning back into Portland on June 30.

The ship will embark on a six-night ‘dress rehearsal’ sailing on July 1 to Falmouth, Fowey, Dartmouth and Poole followed by a second identical itinerary departing on July 7.

Stanborough Lake tests sailors of Welwyn Garden City Sailing Club with its ever-changing conditions

The leaders had a close fought race until both Adams and Alex Shelley had to do penalties as the boats clashed rounding one of the marks of the course.

The first starters in the second pursuit race pulled well ahead and were not caught by any of the fast boats.

Walter went on to win with Adams eventually throwing off Shelley to come second.

Roger Morse managed to catch up and nearly caught Adams right on the hooter but had to settle for third.

Princess Anne visits Thames Sailing Club in Surbiton

Princess Anne thrilled members of the Thames Sailing Club on Tuesday (June 22) when she paid them a visit on the club's 150th anniversary.

The princess, who is also the president of the Royal Yachting Association and a keen sailor herself, and shared words with old hands, dedicated sailors and kids learning the ropes at the club alike.

Her visit also coincided with the launch of a planned refurbishment of the club itself, and the princess symbolically launched proceedings by planting a tree on site.

She presided over several special races that were held to mark the occasion, including a children’s race in Topper and Optimist dinghies, a Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) race, a Merlin Rocket dinghy race and a race for the club’s 'Thames A Raters', the famous Thames racers dating from 1898, presenting prizes to the winners.

"It was a privilege to host The Princess Royal. We are proud of our links to the royal family through Prince Philip, whose passing we mourn greatly, so this visit was very special to us," TSC Commodore Matt Kyte said, referencing the late Duke of Edinburgh who was a long-standing patron of the club.

COWES WEEK TO HOST UK SONAR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

The biggest fleet of Sonar One designs for more than a decade will gather at Cowes Week 2021 for the UK Sonar National Championship which is being run as part of the Regatta.

Sailed by individuals of all abilities, from novice and experienced crews, both with mixed genders and sailors with disabilities, the Sonar fleet in Cowes boasts the largest fleet of 14 boats based between the Island Sailing Club (ISC) and Cowes Corinthian Yacht Club (CCYC).

The initiative to revive the class is being driven by the Andrew Cassell Foundation (ACF) and the CCYC and supported by Sussex Yacht Club (SYC) to give its sailors inspirational targets to progress to. They are expected to be joined by four boats from SYC, and ACF are also hoping to inspire some more UK boats/charter boats to enter which could bring a total fleet of 20+ boats, making the event as large as the 2019 World Championships held in America. The fleet will contest the Championship over seven races, competing for ‘The Bank Sails Trophy’.

The Itchenor Sailing Club Regatta returned in style - with bright sunshine and over 100 boats out.

Classes enjoying a great turnout included the Swallows, with 15 boats competing for the Shippam Challenge Cup race in National Swallows. The Commodore, as race officer for the day, set a start line near Baker as a rather shifty and fitful sea breeze filled in from the south south west. The course was a proper harbour tour starting with a big beat out to Calvert.

The line had a bit of port bias but it was Skua and Archon who led away from the starboard end and out of the flood tide first. At the tidal break at Thorney point it was Skua slightly ahead with Gwaihir and Spectre finding clear wind lanes. The next decision point was after Copyhold and Gwaihir opted to go hard left to the East Head shore whilst Skua went hard right to the Winner Bank. Had Gwaihir not overstood who knows what would have happened, but it was Skua still ahead for the reach down to Channel.

For a while the leaders looked to have sailed out of the sea breeze into a no wind zone as they came to the buoy, but a puff filled in in time for them to get away. After a fetch to Freddie Brooks and a spinnaker reach to Ellanore, there was a second beat up to Dunes, before a final run home to Park and the Gallon line. At the finish Skua held off Gwaihir to take the win and the very fine Shippam Challenge Cup, with Spectre ahead of Osprey for third and fourth.

The Shippam Challenge Cup was presented by the family made famous by Shippam’s Paste, and family members won it in 1929 and 1930. Results: 1 Skua. Harry and Prue Roome, and Helen Williams; 2 Gwaihir. Mike Wigmore, Charles Hyatt, and Keith Bliss; 3 Spectre. Jonathon and Sophie Pudney. Gemma Carter; 4 Osprey. James Hartley and Rob Sutherland.
