Rutland Sailing Club’s youth group continued their outstanding winning run this week by triumphing in the British Schools Team Racing Championships.

The Rutland team took on the sailors from across the country to become the first UK Club team to win this prestigious trophy.

The event held at Bough Beech Sailing Club, hosted by Sevenoaks School, had 20 of the country’s best youth teams taking part.

The winning team was Ben Tylecote (Harington School), Georgiana Caldecott (Leicester Grammar), Jamie Tylecote (Catmose College), Freya Pembery (Bourne Grammar), Solomon WIlby (Uppingham Community College) and Terry Hacker (Long Road Sixth Form College).

A second Rutland team made up of sailors from Stamford School demonstrated the depth at Rutland by also winning all the races they sailed in the first round.

Rutland Sailing Club now has three national team racing titles, a remarkable achievement as it puts itself very much at the heart of team racing in the country.

French dominate the 2021 Nacra 15 European Championship

After eight races in typical Silvaplana conditions with the Maloja wind blowing from the south west, it was the French teams that took the first three places in the 2021 Open Nacra 15 European Championships.

Without suprise, the Nations Trophy was won by France, ahead of Belgium and Italy. The European Championships firmly mark the welcomed re-start of International Nacra 15 events.

Next up is the Nacra Championships in Gravedona, lake Como in August, followed by the Nacra 15 World Championships in La Grand Motte late October / early Nov and the Youth Sailing World Championships presented by Hempel in Oman in December.

Battle of the bigs at 49th Fastnet Race

A major clash of the titans will take place between two of the world’s fastest maxi-monohulls at the 2021 Rolex Fastnet Race. While the most sought-after victory is, of course, the overall win under IRC, for the monohull that is first home into Cherbourg there is also plenty at stake.

The kudos and personal satisfaction that come with winning on the water are as significant as the more tangible rewards: the Erroll Bruce Cup and, since the Swiss watchmaker partnered the race some twenty years ago, a Rolex chronometer.

Part of this kudos is that alongside the race’s overall winner, the monohull line honors winner is also remembered in the history books. These date back to the first Ocean Race (as it was originally called) in 1925, won by the Le Havre pilot cutter Jolie Brise campaigned by the future first Commodore of the Ocean Racing Club (as it was known until 1931), Commander EG Martin.

Since then some of the world’s largest and most magnificent racing yachts have claimed line honours.

The 49th edition of the biennial Rolex Fastnet Race will start from the Royal Yacht Squadron line on August 8 in Cowes, UK.

UK veterans charity launches new sailing challenge

The UK veterans charity, Turn to Starboard is trying to find 50 ex-service personnel to sail 2,000 miles from Land's End to John o'Groats

Turn to Starboard is offering a unique opportunity for 50 ex-Service personnel who have been wounded or injured to join the epic challenge for a one-way voyage in either direction.

The Long Way Up will see a fleet of five yachts set sail from Land’s End on 7 September 2021.

Crew members will spend around three weeks at sea navigating the west coast of mainland Britain while learning to sail under expert tuition from professional instructors.

The CEO and founder of Turn to Starboard, Shaun Pascoe, said the aim of the challenge was for wounded veterans to ‘experience the therapeutic effects of sailing and the sea, meet people facing similar challenges as their own and gain valuable new skills.’

‘Crew members can choose to either set sail from Land’s End or John O’Groats on a 1,000 nautical-mile trip and enjoy stunning views along Britain’s wild coastline. Each participant will get the chance to develop their sailing ability and skippering skills, learn about navigation, meteorology, safety and signals.’

No previous sailing experience is required as all participants will receive expert tuition from professional instructors.

Places are available to injured veterans, serving or retired, whether they want to take part in a challenge or just have fun on the water.

For more information or to apply for a place on the Long Way Up expedition, contact Helen on 01326 314262 or email helen@turntostarboard.co.uk.

Introducing the GWA Wingfoil Race Class

Formed as a united, independent body by wingfoiling's most established brands in the summer of 2020 the goal of the Global Wingsports Association (GWA) is to represent the interests of wingsports in general and to support and promote the interests of all professional and nonprofessional wingriders worldwide.

Countdown to the Round the Island Race

On Saturday, nearly 1200 boats will race around the Isle of Wight in Britain’s Favourite Yacht Race. With so many high-profile events being cancelled, the Round the Island is being tipped as the biggest mass participation event to be staged since the UK’s first lockdown a year ago.

Run by the Island Sailing Club, this year is the 90th anniversary of the race, and after so many months of yacht racing being halted in the UK, it’s a welcome return for many fired-up competitors. Renowned sailor and Helly Hansen Ambassador Pip Hare will be firing the cannons at the Royal Yacht Squadron for the first start at 0630 and then jumping on a rib to join the crew on quarter tonner ‘Belinda’.
