Military veterans set sail on charity expedition

A team of military veterans have set sail on an ambitious sailing trip from Land's End to John O'Groats. The 25-strong crew is made up of Armed Forces veterans who have been affected by their military service - or struggling with isolation during the pandemic.

The expedition has been organised by Turn to Starboard - a Falmouth-based charity that uses sail training to help veterans with physical and mental injuries. The aim is for participants to experience the known therapeutic effects of sailing and the sea, boost self-esteem, develop lifelong skills, and connect with others facing similar challenges as their own.

A fleet of four yachts took to the water on Sunday, September 12 at Falmouth in Cornwall. The amateur crew will now travel up the west coast of Britain for the next three weeks with stopovers at ports along the route.

All crew members have all gone through four days of training and familiarisation sessions at Falmouth where they learnt the basics of sailing to help man the yachts.

The fleet is expected to cross the finish line at John O'Groats in early October. Here they will swap places with a new team of veterans who will depart for the return voyage.

Each yacht is fitted with a GPS location device so the shore support team, family members and supporters can track their progress. See www.turntostarboard.co.uk/long-way-up-live-gps-tracker

To learn more about the expedition, or to make a donation, visit www.turntostarboard.co.uk or call 01326 314262.

2021 K6 National Championship at the Royal Torbay Yacht Club

The Royal Torbay Yacht Club hosted the 2021 K6 National Championship from the 9 - 12 September. Numbers were down from previous years, due to coronavirus and other health problems affecting would-be entrants.

Nonetheless, the nine boats that did compete enjoyed mild Torquay weather with some very good sailing conditions for the first three days. Slick race management by PRO Bob Penfold and his experienced team and restraint on the sailors' part meant that there was only one recall for the whole of the series.

2021 Lymington River Scow Championships at Keyhaven Yacht Club

After a year out due to Covid restrictions the Lymington River Scows returned to Keyhaven Yacht Club for their 2021 Championships. The forecast promised a full mix of conditions and a pleasant dose of sunshine.

Masters titles went to Max and Jeremy Vines in the double-handers, and John. Chaundy in the singles. Best newcomer went to Annabel and Harry Hutchinson. Race officer Cy Grisley and team were flawless all weekend with excellent mark positioning and a very quick turnaround between races. The final results emphasised the broad and enduring appeal of the class with the podium being occupied by an age range of eight to eighties.

Graduate open meeting at Swarkstone Sailing Club

After cancelling our 2020 open we finally managed to welcome the Graduates to Swarkestone Sailing Club on Sunday 12th September.

The day began with such promise, a steady westerly coming down the lake, but as the last boat arrived the wind decided to drop, but hey, Graduates can sail on anything, so it was not going to stop them.

Congratulations to all the sailors and thanks to the Swarkestone race team, safety crew and tea bar for all their hard work and making the day run smoothly.

It's safe to say a great day was had by all, fantastic to have juniors in all four boats making it a truly family fun day.

Europe dinghy UK Inland Championships at Draycote Water Sailing Club

An outer trapezoid course was set for the Europes (with Finns on the inner loop), with the Race Office standing for no messing about and opting for the U flag from the off.

There were notable moments of glory for most of the fleet through the day (not necessarily apparent in the results), George Cormack, Kat Walker, Richard Major, Luke Lazell and many others held their own for good periods against front runners.

Sunday dawned with zero breeze and with that looking set for the day, racing was abandoned and the results declared.

Adam Catlow scored consistently well to retain his Youth title, and a notable mention for Gareth Tweedle, scoring a creditable seventh, as well as class newcomer Hector Cisneros who put a really strong and consistent performance to finish third overall (just one point ahead of Tim Laws).

Derbyshire Youth Sailing event at Carsington Sailing Club

Saturday 11th September saw our sailors back at Carsington Sailing Club for our ninth event of this years series, the biggest water we visit, so a new experience for some.

It was great to see all the boats rounding the top marks, with Toppers, Oppis, Comets, Lasers, a Hartley 12, RS Vision and 420 all mixing it up throughout the fleet it made for some close racing.

We had a lot of sailors who were not only new to DYS but also to racing, so a huge well done to them all, we hope to see you again at our next event which is an Inter-county at Rudyard Sailing Club on the 2nd October, registration and more details are on our website – www.dysailing.org

For more information about Derbyshire Youth Sailing and all the results, please visit that website or contact admin@dysailing.org

Congratulations to everyone who took part, but especially to our winners, and thank you to Carsington SC for putting on some great races and making us all feel very welcome.

September sunshine for the Bembridge keelboats

Well what a nice change, especially on Saturday which saw two Redwings and five One-Designs enjoying the champagne conditions provided by a steady F4 SW'erly and plenty of sun.

Starting to the east of Garland from an inflatable, the first leg was a short beat to Garland, then the Redwings headed off to Ruthven and the One-Designs to Janson. Gosling helmed by Serena Gosling made the better start and although Robin Ebsworth in Quintessence was never that far behind it was definitely three crew weather rather than two and meant that Robin (crewed by young Henry Landon) was always going to struggle to keep up with Serena, Kate Powell and Barn Cleave. As she was a couple of minutes ahead, the decision was made to shorten the course by finishing on the line downwind.

The five One-Designs meanwhile had an excellent race on a slightly shorter course; after a pretty good start, Rob Mathieson in No 1 lead the way and was able to remain comfortably in the lead ahead of Jos Coad helming No 8. There was an exciting finish between Jos and Susie Beart helming No 5 with Jos crossing the line at the pin end less that a second ahead of Susie at the Committee Boat end on starboard.

On Sunday once they all managed to reach the start area, the three Flying Fifteens followed the same course as the Redwings. Although just after starting, the breeze picked up a few knots, patience was still the key and Chris Wilkinson helming 3385 was able to establish a substantial lead over Richard Coleman in 3674 by the time they reached E. There was just enough breeze to keep spinnakers flying on the slow run to Nainby and at the finish at Pepe Chris was a couple of minutes ahead of Richard. Full marks to Colin Simmonds in 3750 who stayed the course even though some way behind.

UK Challenger Championships at Rutland Sailing Club

Sixteen Challengers, twelve local and four visiting boats gathered at Rutland Sailing Club for the 2021 UK Challenger Championships on Friday 10 September. This was the first Challenger regatta held in England since the 2019 UK Championships and it was good to be back.

Trophies awarded:

Curtis Cup (1st overall) Graham Hall

Judi Figgures Trophy (2nd overall) Nick Bett

Prentice Pot (3rd overall) Duncan Greenhalgh

Ayrshire Yeomanry Cup (1st Silver) and Silver Piccolo (highest placed sailor previously unplaced at a UK Championships) Steve Lee

2nd Silver Alan Bradley

3rd Silver Jane Scott

Thames Water Shield (winner of last race) Val Millward

Jock Campbell Trophy (best under 30 or over 80) Bill Ridlington

2.4mR National Championship at Rutland Sailing Club

The 2.4 fleet joined the Challenger fleet at Rutland for their National Championship. The rain on Friday morning was a little disappointing but by the time racing had started it had dried up and the wind had filled in.

The breeze was shifting a lot with place changes happening often. One trick was apparently not to go where the swans were eating weed. In the last race Johnny managed to nearly take a race off Megan who took a clean sheet for the weekend.

Over Saturday night there was much talk about who was close to who and who had to beat who. The forecast for Sunday wasn't great and the actual wind was about the same. The fleet launched into patchy breeze and sadly it never settled down. Apart from a good gossip not much else happened that day as the wind wasn't playing ball.

The fleet is looking forward to a better circuit next year with hopefully a fuller year of travelling. Some of the fleet are heading to the end of season event in Antwerp later in October.

Many thanks to Pete and Rutland Sailing Club and to Richard and the Challenger class for a great event. Special thanks to Ben and Sean for getting the fleet on the water each day.

Horning Sailing Club Junior Regatta, OnBoard Festival & Bart's Bash

Saturday 11th September saw Horning Sailing Club's Junior Regatta, OnBoard Festival and Bart's Bash event take place in ideal conditions, with a warm and gentle breeze, the perfect culmination to a busy season's training.

With some nervous of racing at the start of the day, these fears quickly disappeared and the fun element took over, with every sailor completing every race! Racing was extremely close amongst the fleets, but the emphasis was very much on taking part rather than winning. At the conclusion of the Regatta's racing, young sailors enjoyed a BBQ, and trophies were presented. The Regatta's Endeavour Award went to 10-year-old Louis Strowger, who despite being one of the smallest sailors, completed every race in his Optimist, improving each time.

After the Regatta was the Club's annual Bart's Bash race, with many choosing to stay on and take part, as well as being joined by further members. With a keelboat, allcomers dinghy, and optimist/tera fleet, 19 boats took part with, in the true spirit of the event, everyone getting involved. The Keelboat race was won by Adrian Tooke sailing Yeoman Damselfly, with Kim West second in Rebel Queen, and Lorraine Street third in her Yeoman. The 13-strong main dinghy fleet was won by Jasper Richardson in his Topper, with Zia Gittins second, also sailing a Topper. Third was Tallulah Reardon-Burr in her Splash. In the Optimists/Teras, first was Edward Street, second Grace Russell (both sailing Teras) and third Emma Gibbs and Oliver Childerhouse pairing up in an Optimist!
