2021 HYS Hamble Winter Series - Race Week 3

The third weekend of the 2021 HYS Hamble Winter Series was the last double day of this year's series.

Saturday, was day one of the J70's final Grand Slam event of the season and the last chance to improve a boats UK ranking in anticipation of the J70 Worlds in Monaco in 2022. The CRO was Peter Saxton, who, prepared for this event by officiating at the J70 Nationals run by the "Squadron" from Cowes the previous weekend.

On Sunday morning both Pamanti, CV for the J70s and Wetwheels, CV for the IRC Classes left the Hamble with the promise of a pleasant breeze and sunny intervals. With 7-8 knots from 175 degrees everything was set for a great days racing. The only slight issue was the arrival of two other fleets on the plateau, which made things a little congested. The Fast 40s, albeit only three of them, tucked themselves in between the IRC course and the J70 course. Just ¼ of a mile east of Wetwheels the CCYC laid a line for the Etchells Ice Bucket event. As it turned out everyone shared the course area in a well-mannered fashion and all went well.

No one missed or tied themselves to the marks this week, in what was an incident free day for the yachts. Only "Marks One" on the J70 course managed to get in a tangle, by lassoing Hill Head, whilst trailing the windward mark. The crew who shall remain nameless (Paul and Gordon) assure me they put Hill Head back in the right place.

The Bugle pub in Hamble was the very popular day sponsor on Sunday. Ana Rodriguez, the Manger, presented some very generous vouchers to eat at the Bugle for first place yachts and some very welcome liquid refreshment for second and third.

Next week, Soak Insurance will be sponsoring Sunday's racing. I hope the name of the company is not an omen.

Dyer Cup 2021 at Blackwater Sailing Club

A sparkling October afternoon attracted 50 boats to take part in the end of season finale trophy race, the Dyer Cup.

The race team, led by Sheena Berney, had George Whitchurch providing a committee boat start just downriver from Clarks and they were undeterred by a spectacular formation of four USAF F15 fighter jets that flew low over them a few minutes before the start. The fleet set off in good time for a gentle reach down to the start line with a menagerie of cruisers and dinghies including pretty much every class sailing at the club.

Alongside the hugely successful cake sale in aid of Macmillan, the local branch of the RNLI had a stall selling Christmas cards, calendars and gift items and made £330. With sunshine, good racing, cake and shopping a good day was had by all.

The worthy prize winners were:

Dyer Cup

1 - Julie Nelson, Mirror

2 - Jessica Finch, Mirror

3 - Rob and Wendy Walker, Wanderer

Dyer Cup - Slow Handicap Trophy

1 - Julie Nelson, Mirror

Merlin Rocket Craftinsure Silver Tiller Series at Paignton Sailing Club

Fifteen Merlins arrived in Paignton on 9 October for the 2 day Craftinsure Silver Tiller Open Meeting hosted by Paignton Sailing Club. They enjoyed a very friendly reception from the club's members, with blue skies, blue seas, warm temperatures and a lack of crowds. The English Riviera at its best.

On arrival the only missing ingredient was wind. We looked out over a glassy sea towards Torquay. But lo, the water on the Torquay side of the Bay darkened and by start time a gentle 5 knots with lulls had developed and the racing got under way on schedule. A sausage with a gate at the bottom end followed by a triangle was the course for the weekend.

On Sunday the wind was predominately from the northeast but generally clocked right, with some substantial shifts. There was more of it than on Saturday. Indeed, there was enough to make the perfectly set second reach of the triangle on the cusp of what was manageable with a spinnaker. That gave the crews' muscles a workout and created some overtaking opportunities on that leg which had been missing in Saturday's calmer conditions. Blue skies, seas and sunshine were still the order of the day.

Next up, the Craftinsure Silver Tiller heads to Hollingworth Lake Sailing Club on the 16th and 17th October.

Morrish wins Ceilidh Cup for RNCYC

Blustery conditions made for challenging racing for the seven teams competing in the Ceilidh Cup / Scottish Student Sailing (SSS) Match Racing event, hosted at the Royal Northern and Clyde Yacht Club in Rhu, Scotland, on Saturday 9th & Sunday 10th October.

The Ceilidh Cup, a fixture for many years for the club's fleet of Sonar keelboats, resumed this weekend after a Covid-induced hiatus in 2020. Moreover, it is the first competitive event in the Scottish Student Sailing calendar since February 2020.

Event Director, Craig Macdonald, said: "I'm exceptionally pleased with this weekend's match racing. It's been really exciting to be match racing again in Scotland, and we're keen to build this event back for next year, introducing new generations of students to the tactical challenges of match racing, and the necessary crew-work to make a competitive team."

Overall Results: (after 36 races)

International Canoes at the Tata Steel Sailing Club Regatta

With a buzz of excitement from the International Canoe Facebook Page, eight skippers arrived at Tata Steel Sailing Club to join the club for their 2021 regatta.

Unfortunately, on Saturday the smoke from the nearby Port Talbot steelworks continued to rise straight up from the plant that dominates the northern skyline from Eglwys Nunydd reservoir.

The  final race saw the best breeze of the weekend and the sailors were fully powered up perched on the ends of the sliding seats upwind and the boats now planning on the two reaching legs of the trapezoid course. There was however much confusion at the start and with several boats returning back top the start the ocs flag stubbornly continued to fly. Out front and Robertshaw's large lead was destroyed with a spectator friendly series of capsizes directly in front of the clubhouse. This allowed Robin Wood to extend away as he has done so many times before. The pack continued to fight it out with Dave Timson, Andy Gordan and Steve Clarke all fighting for the lower positions amongst themselves were unable to hold Robertshaw back has he charged back through the fleet.

The moment of truth came after an hour of racing with a deafening silence as Robin Wood crossed through the finish line only to then hear the finishing horn behind him as Tony Robertshaw's comeback allowed him to take the race and regatta win. Hampe finished close in second with quite a gap then back to Clarke, Gordan and Dave Timson.
