Site Manager Dave Richardson prepares to cast off on a sailing challenge

Simon Richardson, Site Maintenance Manager at the Ivybridge-based Dame Hannah Rogers Trust, is set to sail in the Eddystone Charity Sailing Pursuit to raise money for the charity.

The 26-mile offshore pursuit will take place on June 18th and is open to sailors of all abilities. The main aim of the event is to fundraise for charities that ‘benefit the human condition’ and it offers a really fun way to raise money for a very worthwhile cause. Now in its 21st year, the Pursuit has raised over £800,000 for over 100 charities. The course will start and finish at the same line off Plymouth Hoe with the course going out to Hand Deeps buoy.

Having joined Dame Hannahs six months ago, Simon is relatively new to sailing but has decided to take on the challenge to raise money for much needed equipment for the young adults. After 10 years in the Royal Navy, Simon spent over 20 years in a number of different roles in Devon before joining Dame Hannahs.

After we had our family sailing experience through Turn to Starboard I decided to enter their Zero to Hero programme in the hope of qualifying as a RYA Yachtmaster. All was going well until Covid hit and all our plans were put on hold. However I now have my RYA Day Skipper qualification and I bought a boat so that I can spend time with the family on the water away from the stresses of modern life. Having worked at Dame Hannahs for a little over six months, I have seen the funding challenges and thought it would be a great opportunity to do something to support the young adults by raising some money to help purchase much needed equipment”.

Cadet Open at Frensham Pond Sailing Club

Forty-eight sailors arrived at Frensham Pond Sailing Club on Saturday 19 March to take part in the Cadet Open meeting. The weather lived up to the forecast - a base of around 15 knots but large gusts to contend with, especially in the morning. At least it was from the east, which reduced the chances of chronic shifts that so often trick the visitor to Frensham (and some of the regulars too). Bright sunshine brought out the first reminder of the season for suncream.

Many thanks go to Frensham Cadet Class Captain David Boddy and the small army of volunteers, which he mustered to help organise and run a fantastic event. Truth be told, all did it with pleasure; there's little better than seeing young people out on the water, gaining experience, competing and stretching themselves. All excellent preparation for the second World Team selector event at Pevensey Bay on 23 and 24 April - bring it on!

A busy year ahead for the UK Flying Fifteen Class

The UK Flying Fifteen fleet have a very busy season including the usual selection of regional championships held at some of the bedrock clubs of F15 sailing. First up is the Northern Championship & Lakeland GP to be sailed at the Royal Windermere Yacht Club.

"Next year, 2023 will mark the 60th anniversary of Flying Fifteens at the Royal Windermere Yacht Club, and in 2022 we are delighted to be hosting the Northern Area Championships. The club Yacht club is situated in Bowness Bay, the centre point of England's longest Lake. The location gives us options to sail in either the North or South Lakes depending on the wind direction on the day and as such we are never short of a variety of courses and conditions."

Being at the club for nearly 60 years is testament to just how good the Flying Fifteen is suited to Lake sailing. The fleet at the club has always been active both at home and on the open meeting circuit, and the standard of racing is very high and competitive throughout the fleet. Recently retired 3 times World Champion Steve Goacher is threatening to sail with us much more this season."

"We were one of the first clubs in the North West to resume racing after the first lockdown, and this coupled with the fact that we extended our season to the end of November, sparked a lot of interest in the class, with several new boats joining the fleet and partaking in competitive and exciting club racing. For the 2022 season we now boast 27 boats in the boat park, the majority of whom will be competing in club racing, which takes place Saturday's, Sunday's and Thursday evenings. Double figure turnouts are now the norm rather than the exception.

For the Northern Championships we are expecting 30-40 boats to sail in exceptional surroundings and enjoy the hospitality that the club has to offer. It's true that the wind can be challenging depending on its direction, but competitors are assured of a warm welcome and a well organised race series. We look forward to welcoming you."

2022 Calendar of Regional Championship Regattas:

British Keelboat League Seeks Team Entries

The British Keelboat League (BKL) is urging teams to get their entries in for 2022 following the launch of a new format designed to make the series bigger and better than ever.

Visiting stunning locations across the country, a fleet of ready-to-go keelboats at each event will make it easy for sailors to simply #RockUpAndRace and teams will be able to compete with either four or five crew on board. Entry for all events is now open at British Keelboat League and clubs wanting to enter the Premiership need to register their interest by 1st April.

Twelve clubs will be invited to compete in the prestigious new Premiership division. Points will be accumulated across three events with no discard and the overall winners will be invited to compete in next year’s Sailing Champions League in Europe.

Clubs do not need to have the same team members on board at all three events so crew can alternate to suit individual availability for the series, which will take place as follows:

28-29 May: Carsington Sailing Club, Derbyshire

13-14 August: Queen Mary Sailing Club, Londo

30 September-2 October: BKL final, Royal Southern Yacht Club, Hampshire

Clubs are invited to register their interest for an invitation to participate in the BKL

Premiership by emailing bklrs21@rssailing.com before the deadline of 1st April 2022.

One week to go until the SailGP Season 2 Champion is crowned, teams took to the iconic San Francisco Bay for the first time in preparation for the Grand Final, March 26-27.

Port of Fowey Race Organising Committee rebrands

The organisers of sailing events and racing in Fowey, Cornwall, have this week launched a new name and branding. The Port of Fowey Race Organising Committee or POFROC will now be known publicly as Fowey Sailing Committee.

Fowey Sailing Committee comprises members of both the Royal Fowey Yacht Club (RFYC) and Fowey Gallants Sailing Club (FGSC) and represents both clubs for the purpose of organising and promoting sailing and racing events in and around Fowey.

Committee member Andrew Dellow said: "Our objective is to raise the profile of Fowey as a key sailing destination in Cornwall and to position ourselves as the go to place in the southwest for visiting sailors, sailing races, sailing events, leisure sailing and spectators. We are fortunate to be in an area of outstanding natural beauty and Fowey Harbour and the waters beyond offer unique sailing conditions with spectacular coastal scenery." Andrew continues: "The committee felt that to achieve our objectives, we needed to simplify our name and put sailing at the heart of a strong brand that can be promoted in a consistent way in all communications."

We have some important sailing events coming up this year, including the prestigious International 14 Prince of Wales Cup in June and our annual Fowey Royal Regatta Sailing Week in August. As part of the re-launch we have set up new social media channels on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. We want to spread the word to a national and international audience about the amazing potential Fowey offers for sailing and racing events, competitors and spectators.

Fowey Sailing Committee social media channels can be found on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter @foweysailing
