OCTOGENARIAN ISLANDER TO SAIL ROUND BRITAIN TO RAISE FUNDS FOR PARKINSON’S RESEARCH

81-year-old David Temple will set sail around the UK from Yarmouth to raise money and awareness for Parkinson’s UK and Cure Parkinson’s next Tuesday (24th May).

The main motivation for the epic journey of the West Wight resident is that his wife Hazel has suffered from the debilitating disease for many years. He aims to raise as much money and awareness for 2 charities doing their utmost to find a cure for a disease which affects over 145,000 people in the UK alone.

What makes this voyage exceptional is the age of David and his crew. Sailing with him is 69-year-old former Olympian AndrΓ© Usborne. Other sailors will join them on their epic 2,100-mile journey, including Kit Noble who himself suffers from Parkinson’s.

The challenging route includes navigating round the most northerly point of the British Isles, a rock called Muckle Flugga (nearer to Norway than mainland Scotland). The journey is expected to take at least 29 days, with some tricky stretches of coast, overnight sailing, and everything the British weather throws at the crew of the 34ft yacht.

“I am in my 80s with many ageing issues but still active and able to support her. My challenge is to sail my small 34 ft Yacht around Britain (some 2,000 miles) and round the most northerly point of the British Isles a rock called Muckle Flugga (nearer to Norway than mainland Scotland) in 4 weeks.

“It’s a tough one, I’ll visit remote locations where you can see 4 seasons of weather in one day with tricky navigation and lots of overnight sailing. AndrΓ© Usborne, a good friend and sailor, will stay with me for the whole journey, but we will be joined at various stages to get through the tricky bits of the journey by Kit Noble (who also has Parkinson’s) John Smith, Steve Burton, and my grandson Sam.

“Follow me on the Marine Traffic App, on your phone and search for ‘Second Wind UK’ to follow us. We leave Yarmouth Isle of Wight on Tuesday 24th May at 6:00 and, with a fair wind, will be back (via London) on 3rd July.”

Anyone wishing to donate to David Temple’s Parkinson’s research fundraising may do so by visiting https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/davidtemple81.

Norfolk Punt Club Social Saturday season commences

The now traditional Social Saturday season has commenced with a superb day of "fun and frolics" on the pontoons moored in Barton Broad. With the new season it is always great to welcome new members and this year has seen many local families joining in, as well as the regular collection of sailing and cake eating members.

Many of the crews remain overnight and sail in the Sunday race sessions. The weather on Saturday was almost perfect and a good time was had by all.

On Sunday (Race Day) the weather turned to a cold and overcast day, with a brisk ESE wind, not the most attractive for setting a course for long beats to windward however the fleets were well spaced overall at the finish line.

There were four races and the Punts were well represented and proved to be very competitive! Thanks to Philip Roberts, Officer of the day and his trusty helpers.

Our plan is to replace them with 6x Fusion Dinghies through match funding, donations and crowd funding. We would love your help to achieve our aim and you can read more about our plans on our CrowdFunding page. I thank you all, as a community, for anything you pledge. If you cannot pledge, please consider sharing.

As recommend by the RYA, we have also signed up to easyfundraising. If you're a keen online shopper, consider using this extension to help our club. Participating retailers make a donation to us at no extra cost to you. So if you’re shopping on eBay or purchasing car insurance please consider donating to us. Once again all funds will going into our Laser Pico replacement fund.

Lark Youth Championship at Frensham Pond Sailing Club

The Lark bandwagon continues its championships' tour of the UK. This time it was for younger sailors to take to the famously unpredictable waters of Frensham Pond Sailing Club to battle it out for the esteemed title of Lark Youth Champion.

This event provides a real yardstick for the future of the Lark Class and from what was witnessed shows that the class is definitely going in the right direction. Many new competitors were trying out the Lark for the first time and by judging by the smiling faces on the water and at the after-sailing pizza party new permanent recruits will be sailing Larks again.

Race one saw conditions at Frensham SC turn to glorious sun - but with a shifty, thermal-filled wind which proved challenging for all.

Race 2 saw so much eager, youthful energy at the reaching start that PRO Nigel Hufton signalled a General Recall!

Race 3 left all to play for, with Bailey & Morgan, Videlo & Gilbert and Carruthers & Slump all able to win!

Bailey & Morgan managed to squeeze past Videlo & Gilbert on the subsequent beat and then lead all the way to secure their first Youth Champion Title!

After a hard day racing, sailors enjoyed the warm welcome of Frensham Pond SC, with free pizza to feast on, courtesy of the Lark Class! These were quickly devoured, whilst chatting and laughing about the days racing and how perfect the Lark is for Youth sailing.

Samuel Bailey, 2022 Lark Youth Champion, said, "The event was a huge success both on and off the water. Frensham Pond provided a wonderful environment to show off the Lark class and it's growing youth fleet. I started sailing a Lark six years ago and have never looked back. It's a very rewarding boat to sail and competitive class to enjoy racing in."

Special thanks go to Nigel Hufton and Chris Ellis for organising the event, including the boat borrowing, race management, tuning guidance and pizza ordering! Great work fellas. Also, thank goes to the Lark Class for sponsoring the event pizzas and prizeware!

Next Event is the big one - The Lark National Championships at Pentewan Sands Sailing Club. All info can be found at nationals.larkclass.org

Tasar Open at Whitstable Yacht Club

On the 14th & 15th May the Tasar fleet gathered for their first Open Meeting of the year at Whitstable Yacht Club hosted in conjunction with the Merlin Rocket class.

The Merlin fleet started promptly, followed by the Tasars; the fleet got away first time under black flag and the race was on... sailors were fully hiked enjoying the 10-12 knots of Easterly breeze in the sunshine and minimal waves.

Boats crossed tacks frequently up the first beat and at the windward mark Rick and Sarah Perkins (WYC) were first round followed by David and Fiona Sayce (HISC) and then Clair and Simon Medd who were making a guest appearance whilst visiting the UK from their home in Melbourne (AUS).

David and Fiona then showed their superior downwind wave technique to slip into the lead; on the second upwind Rick and Sarah nipped back into the lead but were again overtaken downwind as David and Fiona went on to take the win in race 1. Simon and Claire held on for 3rd closely pressed by the rest of the fleet.

Race 2 and 3 followed a relatively similar pattern with David and Fiona again winning from Rick and Sarah; the leading pair were never more than a few boat lengths apart and enjoyed a good battle.

Sunday dawned with light winds contrary to the forecast but the racing got away on time.

Again at the first mark Rick and Sarah lead from David and Fiona and Clair and Simon; as the race progressed the breeze faded and again David and Fiona sneaked into the lead to take the win at the first leeward mark as the course was shortened in the failing breeze.

The fleet then bobbed around a bit whilst the breeze re-established itself allowing the race team to get Race 5 away. Again Rick and Sarah lead at the first mark but David and Fiona pulled through to take the win from Rick and Sarah with Clair and Simon again 3rd.

The wind then failed completely and the race team took the popular decision to call it a day and the sailors returned ashore.

WYC hosted the prize-giving promptly and then the travelers headed home with 5 races under their belts.

Making a return to Cornwall, the two-day Southwest Championships, racing on 3rd and 4th July will be swiftly followed by the renowned Edinburgh Cup, raced from 5th - 8th July 2022.

Dragons from Cowes, Burnham, Aldeburgh, Medway, and Ireland have already got their places secured at the most prestigious Dragon event in the racing calendar. Sailors will be set to enjoy first class sailing and a packed social programme across the six days in Falmouth.

This year's venue for the 2022 Edinburgh Cup, the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club (RCYC) is located within a Grade II listed clubhouse on a 17th century private quayside. The club overlooks spectacular views of Falmouth Harbour, Flushing, Carrick Roads and beyond.

The Edinburgh Cup has been the British Open National Championship for the British Dragon Class since 1949. It was presented by the Duke of Edinburgh (Prince Philip) after the members of the Island Sailing Club presented Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip with a Dragon named Bluebottle on the occasion of their marriage in 1948. This was also incidentally the first year in which the Dragon was an Olympic class. Bluebottle herself was to play a part in the competition under various sailing masters, finishing second in 1954 with Lt. Commander Hewitt, second again with Graham Mann in 1956 and third with Ross Coles in 1960.
