Post-lockdown success for 7th Heaven in Whitehaven Sailing and Boating Association competition
Seven yachts competed for the Romar Trophy over a course from Whitehaven to Ross Island near Kirkcudbright.
A bright day with a 10-18 knot wind allowed the fleet to maintain a reasonable speed and all completed the Whitehaven Sailing and Boating Association race within six and a half hours. The winning yacht, first over the line was 7th Heaven (A. French) in just over five hours. Santa Vey came in second (J.&S. Travers), Urchin (A. Tomlinson) came in third and Lady B (B. Yardley) took fourth. Erythea (A.&A. Moore) finished in fifth, Kon Tiki in sixth (D.&S. O’Reilly) and SV Percy (J. Roberts) in seventh.
After a night anchored in the shelter of Ross Island, the yachts raced back to Whitehaven for the Ross Island Cup. Winds made for a faster return and 7th Heaven again took the cup in just over four hours with the rest of the yachts finishing within 50 minutes. Ross Island results: 1. 7th Heaven. 2. Kon Tiki. 3. Erythea. 4. SV Percy. 5 Santa Vey. 6. Urchin. Lady B. retired.
To complete a shortened season, a different handicap system was used to obtain a different order for the Irish Sea Challenge Trophy. Kon Tiki came first, Santa Vey second. SV Percy placed third, Urchin fourth and 7th Heaven in fifth, Lady B came sixth and Erythea finished in seventh place.
