Isle of Wight sailors showed passion for Valentine Trophy race weekend

Saturday's racing got off to a great start, with 17 sailors ready to do battle on the waves.

Owen Pay was first to the windward mark by quite a margin — holding off Colin Simonds to win the first race.

There was just enough of a breeze to make a second race worthwhile, won by Mark Downer, despite hitting a 'hole' in the breeze and stopping dead, with Biddle ghosting through into second.

On Sunday afternoon, 20 Illusions competed.

In the first race, Jonathan Nainby-Luxmoore was first to round the windward mark, but he had to settle for second after Bruce Huber took control.

The second race was halted after two rounds. After a good start, Huber was unstoppable — and he won the following race.

With the cold beginning to bite, the final race of the day was close, with Biddle just crossing the finish line ahead of Julia Bailey.

Overall, Biddle was awarded the Valentine Trophy for being the most consistent at the front end of the fleet — ten points ahead of Colin Simonds.

Caroline Simonds was the top woman sailor.
