New Lymington Sailability Chairman steps up to the helm

Brockenhurst resident and yachting enthusiast Nick Jacobs has stepped up to the helm with a pledge to recruit additional helpers to secure the charity’s future.

Nick initially learnt of Sailability’s struggle to recruit a new chairperson after reading a story in the A&T and felt compelled to help.

He said: “My father was blind so I have fundraised for the Guide Dogs for the Blind and I was previously the vice-chair of the ADHD Foundation.

“I have always had an interest in helping people with disabilities so it is a great honour and privilege for me to take on this exciting role.

“I’ve made a lot of friends locally through sailing and I hope to reach out to the local sailing community to recruit new volunteers.

“I cannot do it alone but with an amazing team in place I feel confident that we can steer Sailability towards a bright future.”

Originally from Liverpool, Nick and his wife Alison moved to Brockenhurst six years ago to fulfil an ambition to spend more time sailing.

Nick’s passion for the sport was ignited in 2007 when he joined a crewing team in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.

He said: “Until that point I had never set foot on a yacht but it’s safe to say I was completely hooked.

“We always loved the New Forest but a big factor in us moving to the area was the opportunities for sailing.”

Soon after arriving Nick began crewing for the Thursday Night Racing at the Royal Lymington Yacht Club and then became a full member.

He runs a food import and export business and helped steer his former rugby club to financial security.

People that want to sail or volunteer are always welcome to be part of our vibrant charity.”
