Girton Sailing Club prepares for new season with launch of courses for beginners

Preparations are well under way at Girton Sailing Club for the start of the new season.

Many club members have been busy for the last few months preparing for a busy new season, both on and off the water.

Volunteers have worked to improve access routes, tidying up overgrown bank areas, and sprucing up the whole site and clubhouse.

Apart from the usual annual race calendar, which begins in March, the club is also running courses from April, for sailing and powerboat training with Royal Yachting Association (RYA)certificated qualifications.

Girton Sailing Club is an accredited RYA Training Centre.

The club says dinghy sailing is a wonderful way to test your skills and fitness against the elements, and it rewards people in different ways, from those that want full blown competitive racing to others that just want to gently potter around and get close to nature.

Because of the variable weather conditions it can offer you all the thrills of speed or the opportunity of testing your senses in making headway when there is little or no wind.

Both are skills that can be learned by training at Girton.

Girton Sailing Club can offer the requirements you need to get started with dinghy sailing and as a club, it has a beautiful secluded setting with a lake offering plenty of space for beginners and experienced sailors.

Girton Sailing Club takes safety on the water seriously and all group sessions will have at least one safety boat with a qualified crew watching over everyone.

A spokesman said: “If you are looking for a new sport/hobby then why not give it a go?

“You can start without owning a boat or buoyancy aid. All you need is some suitable clothing that may get wet and soft footwear. Remember, if you have the energy, the power of the wind comes free!”
