The Isle of Wight will take a 4 person sailing team to the Island Games in Guernsey facing tough competition in the hunt for medals.
Traditionally, sailing has been a strong event for the Island with only Anglesey winning more Golds and total medals in the history of the Games. However, the Isle of Wight has not won Gold since 2007 in Rhodes and face stiff competition in this edition.
Encouragingly, they landed a silver in the Laser Standard Rig as well as a team Bronze at the last Island Games held in the Channel Islands – in Jersey in 2015.
3 out of 4 team members will be competing in their 2nd Island Games after going to Gibraltar in 2019 – Alex Downer alongside brothers Harry and Charlie White – while Noah Evans will be making his debut and completing the team.
The boats – which are provided by the organisers to ensure a level playing field – will be Laser Standard Rigs and Laser Radial Rigs with aggregate scores determining who will receive the team medal.
The team’s Manager is Tony Burton who will be going to his 1st Island Games but who has a wealth of experience and who has been preparing for the Island Games for some years having been set to go to the 2021 Games in Jersey which were aborted due to Covid.
Sailing events will take place at St Peter Port from 09:30 on the 1st 5 days of the Games with medals handed out after the final races on Thursday 13th July.
