Lark Short Course Championship and Open at Itchenor Sailing Club

Following the tranquillity of the Banbury Open meeting in June, the Larks (shared with the Fireflys) held their next event at Itchenor Sailing Club on the 1st and 2nd July. On the Saturday the Lark fleet had a short course championships with six short races scheduled and on the Sunday an open meeting with three standard-saized races.

Strong gusty westerly winds prevailed over the weekend providing exciting racing. The short course races were run in a narrow stretch of Itchenor channel west of the sailing club. With gusts over 25mph, and the tide running against the wind, conditions were both exciting and challenging with plenty of capsizes and unfortunately one broken mast. The narrow channel also provided a natural barrier forcing boats to gybe, often in a strong gust with nowhere else to go.

Thanks to Itchenor sailing club for a well run event and hospitality. The Larks move onto the Salcombe Regatta between 6th-11th August, and with still the Inland and Winter Championships in the 2023 calendar, plus opens at Weymouth and Waldringfield, there is plenty to look forward to in the coming months.
