ILCA 6 World Championships kick off huge 2024 as Paris 2024 Olympics countdown continues

The ILCA 6 World Championships starts on January 5 and runs until January 10. The action will take place in Mar del Plata, a resort city on Argentina’s Atlantic coast situated 250 miles south of capital Buenos Aires.

The great and the good of the ILCA 6 class – formerly the Laser Radial – will be at the worlds, with 105 entries from 47 countries. Representing the British Sailing Team are Hannah Snellgrove, Daisy Collingridge and Matilda Nicholls, with the British Sailing Squad’s Molly Sacker also in action.

The ILCA 6 worlds kick off what is set to be a monumental year for the British Sailing Team. The Paris 2024 Olympics are just seven months away, and while athletes will be aiming to peak this summer there’s no doubt that a world championship medal this close to an Olympics would be a huge boost for any sailor.

The race to win the one ILCA spot with Team GB for Paris 2024 is still on – so every result in this class carries huge weight.

What they said:

Hannah Snellgrove: “It feels like it hasn’t been long since the last worlds, and I finished one point off the medal race at The Hague so it’s exciting to have a chance to try and rectify that soon. Argentina is a country I haven’t visited before, and I’ve heard good things about the venue with epic waves and great sailing conditions, so hopefully it lives up to its reputation. Oddly enough I’ve never actually competed in the worlds in the year building up to the Olympics, so there’s something quite special about that and lining up against the best in the world on their top form. Looking forward to it!”

Daisy Collingridge: “Our worlds this year are in a venue I’ve never been before, which is always exciting! I’ve done a lot of work to try and iron out some big mistakes from last season and to get quick in conditions we’re expecting to have. I can’t wait to get on the race course.”

Matilda Nicholls: “I am super excited to get to the Worlds in Argentina. It's really cool to be in a brand new venue and what a way to kick off the New Year. I can't wait to be battling it out with the top sailors in our fleet, we are all pushing hard now with the Olympic Games coming up next summer.”

If you want to track the progress of the Brits the best place to do so is on the British Sailing Team social media channels. Each day they will keep you posted on results, and feature the best photos the event has to offer.
