North Herts and East Beds Sailing Club marks 60 years

Members marked the occasion on Saturday, June 29 with a variety of unusual activities - including sailing backwards and jousting on a paddleboard.

The club was started 60 years ago when sailors from Stevenage and North Herts met up in Baldock to found a sailing club within the area.

The Blue Lagoon had previously been a quarry mined by the Arlesey Brick and Lime Company, which was disused from 1930 and allowed to fill up with water.

As well as being used by the club, the lake is now used by divers, triathlon swimmers and anglers.

The first sailors had often built their own boats, and for many years the site was almost exclusively used for twice-weekly racing.

In recent years there has been a growing presence of social sailing, which includes informal instruction for learners of all ages.

A growing fleet of club dinghies are available for new sailors to learn and develop skills, and scout groups have weekly sessions at the club.

Paddleboarding is on offer as the main alternative to sailing, and many sailors have gone on to race and sail around the country.
