The Newark Trust supports able2sail charity with £10k grant

AN Inverkip-based organisation that offers sailing opportunities for disabled people has been boosted by a £10,000 donation from a recently launched charity.

The Newark Trust, established earlier this year, has awarded the grant to volunteer-run able2sail, which operates three days a week from Kip Marina throughout the summer and provides on-the-water experiences for disabled people, their carers, and families aboard a specially adapted yacht.

Welcoming the financial contribution, Gordon Tatnell, chair of able2sail, said: “It is great to have this support from the Newark Trust and in turn for us to create opportunities, particularly for young disabled people in Inverclyde to sail with us.

Our charity is run entirely by volunteers so money will be spent on the costs of running and maintaining the yacht and supporting the people who come on board.

Clare Stone, Newark Trust manager, said: “Able2sail are an amazing charity, enabling sailing experiences that many disabled people may not have had before and giving an opportunity for them and their families and carers to learn, have fun and make memories together - The Newark Trust is delighted to support them.

“We were introduced to the charity by Steve Railton, one of the team from the McLaren Packaging Group who volunteers for them, and I was tremendously impressed by the skills, expertise and dedication of all the volunteers and by the adaptations made to the yacht to open up sailing to local disabled people and to provide a fantastic experience."
