Scottish and Welsh Big Boats Among First Entries for Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta 2025

Although the first race of the Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta (VDLR) is still seven months away, six entries have already been submitted for Ireland's largest regatta in 2025. July's grand prix is expected to attract an estimated fleet of 350 to 400 boats, including some of the fastest yachts across Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and England.

The first entry in the coastal class, which includes yachts over 12 metres in length, is Jonathan Anderson's Scottish X4 named Xaviera. Another early entry in this class is Checkmate XX, a First 50 owned by Howth's Corinthian IRC Euro champions Nigel Biggs and Dave Cullen.

The first entry in the Cruisers Zero (A) category is the Welsh IRC champion J/122E Mojito, skippered by Peter Dunlop and Victoria Cox of Pwllheli Sailing Club in North Wales.

The VDLR Regatta organisers have been hard at work throughout December. They recently met with representatives from Irish Sea Regatta interests in South Dublin Port to discuss potential areas of mutual cooperation. As reported by Afloat, this collaborative effort has already led to the creation of the Irish Sea Nations Cup Trophy.

Championship chairman Don O'Dowd has also confirmed the inclusion of the Melges 15 Europeans for this year's event, secured Volvo's long-standing sponsorship for 2025, and published the regatta's Notice of Race.
