Enjoy the Algarve,s natural attractions, towering cliffs, hidden bays and charming towns

 



The Algarve region in southern Portugal is stunning, with beautiful coastline, caves, cliffs, and charming coastal towns, islets and natural parks that always make for an incredible sailing adventure .⛵



Day 1: Lagos to Portimão (10 NM)

Morning: Depart from Lagos Marina.

Sail Time: ~2 hours.

Afternoon Activity: Explore Portimão’s old town and enjoy lunch at a traditional marisqueira (seafood restaurant).

Evening: Visit Praia da Rocha for sunset drinks or live music.


Day 2: Portimão to Alvor Lagoon (5 NM)

Sail Time: ~1 hour.

Anchor: In the sheltered Alvor Lagoon.

Activity: Kayak or paddle board through the lagoon and dunes.

Onshore: Stroll through Alvor’s cobbled streets and dine at a seaside restaurant.



Day 3: Alvor to Ilha da Culatra (Ria Formosa) (40 NM)

Longer Sail Day (~6–7 hours) — start early.

Stop: Optional lunch anchor near Vilamoura or Faro.

Anchor: Near Ilha da Culatra, a peaceful island village.

Onshore Activity: Explore the fishing community and walk the wooden paths to the beach. No cars — just sand and sun.


Day 4: Ilha da Culatra to Ilha da Armona (short hop)

Sail Time: ~30 mins.

Anchor or dock: Near Armona's ferry pier.

Onshore: Discover this laid-back island with white sandy beaches and beach cafés. Snorkeling is excellent here.

Optional hike: Explore to the far eastern beaches for solitude.



Day 5: Ilha da Armona to Tavira / Ilha de Tavira (10 NM)

Sail Time: ~2 hours.

Dock: Near the Tavira anchorage or town quay.

Onshore Activity: Visit Tavira—a historic and charming town with Roman bridges, churches, and great local cuisine.

Evening: Dine in Tavira’s old town or catch live music in the square.


Day 6: Tavira to Faro (via Ria Formosa) (20 NM)

Sail through the Ria Formosa lagoon, a protected natural park.

Wildlife: Watch for flamingos, storks, and spoonbills.

Onshore: Visit Faro's old town, the bone chapel (Capela dos Ossos), and enjoy a sunset rooftop bar.




Day 7: Faro to Lagos (50 NM) – Return Journey

Early Departure: This is a longer haul back (~8 hours).

Alternative: Stop halfway in Vilamoura (25 NM) for a luxurious marina stay and golf/spa break, and return to Lagos the next day if you have flexibility.

Best Time: May to October for calm seas and warm temps.

Marinas vs Anchoring: Mix of marina stays and anchoring in lagoons/islets.

Permits: Ria Formosa is protected—anchoring is permitted in designated areas.
