The Jewel that is Menorca


 

Menorca is a fantastic destination for a family sailing trip—calm waters, beautiful coves, charming coastal towns, and rich history make it perfect for a mixed itinerary of sailing and onshore exploration. Here's a 5–7 day suggested sailing itinerary around Menorca that includes family-friendly onshore activities as well:


Day 1: Mah贸n (Ma贸) – Arrival & Explore

Harbor: Mah贸n Port (one of the largest natural harbors in the world)

Onshore Activities:

Visit Fortaleza de la Mola (19th-century fortress – kids love the tunnels!

Explore Mah贸n’s old town and its markets

Dinner at a seafront restaurant with Menorcan seafood

Overnight: Mah贸n Marina


Day 2: Mah贸n → Es Grau (short sail)

Sailing: ~1 hour (6 NM)

Anchorage: Es Grau – a tranquil, shallow bay

Onshore Activities:

Kayaking or paddleboarding in S’Albufera des Grau Natural Park

Easy coastal hikes for kids with great wildlife spotting

Optional: Visit the nearby Illa d’en Colom by dinghy

Overnight: At anchor or mooring buoy



Day 3: Es Grau → Fornells

Sailing: ~3 hours (15 NM, northeast coast)

Harbor: Fornells Bay – very sheltered

Onshore Activities:

Try family-friendly sailing or windsurfing lessons

Enjoy a traditional lobster stew (caldereta) for dinner

Explore the sleepy town & walk up to Castell de Sant Antoni

Overnight: Fornells Port


Day 4: Fornells → Cala Pregonda

Sailing: ~2 hours (10 NM)

Anchorage: Cala Pregonda (stunning red-gold beach, only reachable by boat or foot)

Onshore Activities:

Snorkeling in crystal-clear waters

Beach games and a relaxed afternoon

Note: This is a more remote stop—no facilities

Overnight: At anchor




Day 5: Cala Pregonda → Ciutadella

Sailing: ~4–5 hours (20 NM)

Port: Ciutadella – charming historic town

Onshore Activities:

Explore the old town, cathedral, and palaces

Visit Castell de Sant Nicolau

Evening gelato and tapas stroll along the marina

Overnight: Ciutadella Marina


Day 6: Ciutadella → Cala Macarella / Cala Galdana

Sailing: ~2 hours (12 NM)

Anchorages: Cala Macarella (smaller, scenic) or Cala Galdana (more services)

Onshore Activities:

Short coastal hikes to Cala Mitjana or Cala Turqueta

Family beach time with clear shallow waters

Overnight: At anchor



Day 7: Cala Galdana → Mah贸n

Sailing: ~5–6 hours (25 NM – return leg)

Optional stop: Cala en Porter for lunch or swimming

Back in Mah贸n: Enjoy your last night with dinner and souvenir shopping

Best Time: Late May to early October
