A 99-year-old former sailor has taken to the seas one last time.

Care UK’s Kentford Manor in Newmarket arranged for resident Peggy Saunders, a sailing enthusiast, to hoist the sails once more.

The care home organised a visit to the Woolverstone Project at Woolverstone Marina after learning about Peggy's past.

On the day of the trip, Peggy was up early and eager to meet the team. She spoke with operations manager Graham Seabrook about her long-standing love of sailing and the joy she felt at the prospect of being back on the water.

Recalling the experience, Peggy said: "It was fantastic to be sailing on open waters again. It brought back so many memories. I knew exactly what the Sonar skippers were talking about and my knowledge of sailing language came back to me straight away. It was just like riding a bike again."

Peggy's wish to sail one last time was inspired by the "Wishing Tree", an initiative by Kentford Manor that enables residents to relive past hobbies or try new experiences.

Julia Forsyth, customer relations manager at Kentford Manor, said: "When the team heard about Peggy’s sailing past and her wish for another adventure, we knew we had to make it happen."

Born in 1926 in Lincolnshire, Peggy was a countryside girl with an adventurous spirit. She and her husband Tony took up sailing in their 50s and passed their sailing tests at the Royal Yachting Association.

They owned several boats together and once completed a 23-hour non-stop sail from Ipswich to Holland.

Residents at Kentford Manor are encouraged to continue with their hobbies and pursuits, with space provided for leisure activities. The home offers full-time residential, dementia and nursing care, as well as short-term respite care.
