Over the weekend of 13th/14th September 2025, our historic Norfolk Dinghies competed on Wroxham Broad for the 21st Anniversary Cup first presented in 1952. The Class had invited an Irish contingent, known as "Wags" who sail Water Wags in Dublin Bay, a very similar design to our Norfolks.
Reputed to be the first one design dinghy, the Water Wags came to be as early as 1886 and we were very pleased and honoured to have representatives of that Class over for the event. We provided them with four Norfolk Dinghies to try and compare with their own. The first Norfolks were designed and built by the late Herbert Woods of Potter Heigham in 1931.
On Saturday following a Practice Race run for the benefit of visitors, the first of the series of five races took place in excellent conditions with 16 Norfolks taking part.
The winner was Sam Woodcock sailing B20 Kelpie crewed by Pat Woodcock. Ian Tims was second in B11 Cockle crewed by Mike Tims. In third place it was Vincent Delany, a "Wag" from Ireland sailing B78 Jimmy and crewed by David Williams.
Tims and Woodcock traded first, second and third positions over the remainder of the competition with Woodcock succumbing to third in the last race giving Tims the win overall but only by one point. Richard Kinder sailing B43 Otter crewed by John Kinder sailed consistently and was third overall.
At the prize-giving on Sunday Tims was presented with the 21st Anniversary Cup, Woodcock the Jimmy Turner Trophy for runner up and also the Perci Memorial Tankard for winning the first race. A very happy Irishman, Vincent Delany won the Patria of Waipu Trophy handicap race for the over 70's and also the Novices Trophy.
A wonderful weekend was had by all competitors, organisers and spectators with special thanks given to Norfolk Broads Yacht Club for hosting the event.
