Rafferty Read clean sweeps the first UK wingfoiling competition of 2024

The arrival of the 2024 UK Wingfoil Tour brought the biggest numbers to date within the national wing foil fleet, and with good wind all weekend at Portland Harbour, this first event kicked the season off with some spectacular wing foil course-racing.

Among the competitors, the young Oxford athlete Rafferty Read was hoping to put all his winter training to use and start his season off with a high. And so he did with style by winning all 11 races throughout the weekend making him the overall winner of the competition.

This makes him the likely favourite moving into this season after a very successful 2023 where he completed the year being crowned as overall UK Wingfoil Champion and 8th in the IWSA world rankings.

No doubt his pure love and dedication towards watersports has pushed him into this dominating position. He has also showed this passion outside wing foiling as he is the commentator and presenter for the IQfoil class which is the Olympic windsurfing discipline. He says, 'I am so grateful to be able to both compete and work in what I love while experiencing the best beach destinations across the globe.

His sporting achievements led to Rafferty being shortlisted as 2023 UKWA UK watersports personality of the year. Combining his own sporting achievements with his role as IQFoil official commentator, Rafferty is excited about what the future has in store for him.

Looe Sailing Club's 90th anniversary celebrations

Looe Sailing Club will this summer celebrate 90 years of raising sails and delivering expectations.

It was formed in the days when one global pandemic was still a recent memory but another was, thankfully, an age away; when the shooting of Bonnie and Clyde was a reality more than a film, and when there were no cat's eyes on the town's roads because Percy Shaw's invention had still to cross the Tamar.

But ever since the club was established in 1934, the varnish on that door has been dulled by the continual knock of young people eager to learn the art of seamanship and dinghy sailing and, in more recent years, of household-name sailing classes wanting to come to the South East Cornwall resort to hold their national and world championship events.

Four years after the first spit-and-sawdust encounter on the quayside, founder club president Wilfred Neale dreamed up a plan for Looe to have its own sailing dinghy, one specifically tasked to reign supreme over the vagaries of Looe Bay.

Telephones were only just becoming common place, and mobiles and texting were still four decades or more away, but philanthropist Mr Neale still managed to contact the eminent boat designer Uffa Fox and, somehow, persuaded him to channel his renowned skills into drawing the lines of a brand new sailing boat - and so the Redwing, a 14-ft clinker-built dinghy was born.

Its success was not immediate because of the 1939-45 hostilities but it soon grew in popularity and by the 1950s there were fleets across the West Country and even farther afield.

In truth, the clamour for cheaper and arguably faster 'plastic' boats would inevitably lead to a decline in Redwing numbers but it still holds a romantic place in the heart of its birth place and Looe will yet again host the boat's national championships this summer.

However, Looe is known for so much more than Redwing sailing.

Over the years the light blue-sails of the Enterprise class has given the town podium places on the UK stage, while also hosting world and national championships - and the 'Ents', too, will be returning to Looe in this special birthday year for their own national sailing week.

Meanwhile the Jack Holt-designed Mirror dinghy, mass produced on the back of Barry Bucknell's do-it-yourself 1960s television programme and financed by the national newspaper which gave it its name, continues to provide a pathway into the sport for the young people of the town and the surrounding area.

As Looe's reputation as a family holiday resort and ideal sailing venue grew, so came the demands for the club to stage week-long national championships for a variety of other classes.

Over the past 40 years there has been a queue of fleets anxious to sample the Cornish hospitality and the complexities of far western English Channel weather systems and tidal flows.

Probably one of the proudest days in the club's history came in 1998 when the RYA decided to bring their annual National Youth Championships to town with 300 young competitors and their families in tow.

Among the guests were Cornwall's own Olympic sailing medallist Ben Ainslie and the RYA president, Princess Anne, who climbed those famous clubhouse stairs to be welcomed by the commodore, the late Brian Carvey.

Looe Sailing Club continues to be at the forefront of the sport, holding twice weekly races for Lasers, Enterprises, Redwings and Mirrors and maintaining its proud reputation as a sailing training centre for young people.

New commodore Simon Bennett, an accomplished Laser and Enterprise helm, will be overseeing the 90th anniversary year with support from his flag officers, vice-commodore John Crabb; rear commodore Jack Pope, treasurer Colin Crabb and also club president Callum Dingle.

The celebrations begin with an 'open house' after club racing on Saturday, April 27, when it is hoped that as many past and current members as possible will be able to attend from 4.30 pm onwards to enjoy some light refreshments and live music as well as renewing old acquaintances and admiring a display of nostalgic memorabilia.

Looe's clubhouse, too, has kept pace with the times and many internal alterations and improvements continue to make it a welcoming and comfortable haven for both sailing enthusiasts and non-sailing members alike.

And a paint brush and tin of varnish for that door are never far away...

Nick Craig back on top of OK Dinghy World Rankings after 14 years

Britain's Nick Craig is back on top of the OK Dinghy World Ranking List for the first time in 14 years, moving up four places.

In fact, it is all change at the top with Patric Mure, from Sweden, moving up two places to enter the top three for the first time ever while Britain's Andy Davis climbs from 11th to third.

The April 2024 World Ranking List includes the 2024 World Championship in Brisbane, plus other events from Australia, Spain, France, and New Zealand. It is also the largest ever Ranking List and now includes a record 797 sailors from 19 countries, an increase of more than 130 sailors from 2023.

Craig was last World No. 1 in December 2010, but since then has not done enough consecutive events to move back on top. But three top places at the last two worlds and Europeans - including his sixth world title in Brisbane - was enough. Davis was runner up in Brisbane and enters the top 10 for the first time.

This release also includes the 2023 Queensland States, won by Tim Davies from David Clark and Mark Jackson; the Midwinters in Palma, won by Ireland's Tim Goodbody from Craig and Germany's Simon Gorgels; the Australian Nationals in Brisbane won by David Clark from New Zealand's Steve McDowell and Roger Blasse, the BM Composites Cup in Palma won by Alejandro Muscat, from Poland's Michal Strumnik and Denmark's Jesper Hoejer; the 2024 Mediterranean Championship in Bandol, won by Timothe Petetin from Pierre Arringhi and Jean Louis Petetin; and finally the Turangi International, in New Zealand, won by Steve McDowell from Dave Ridley and Rod Davis.

He also moves into an elite group of just 10 sailors to have accumulated more than 1,000 points, Craig's score of 1073 points is the highest of all time for any one Ranking List in the 19 years it has been running, overtaking the previous record of 1048 points held by Fredrik Lööf since April 2019.

The next release will be in August after the first round of National Championships across Europe and the European season opener, the Spring Cup at Medemblik in May.

Russell-Cooke Silicon Cup Regatta returns to the Solent in September 2024

The flagship charity sailing event for the IT industry is back to support life-changing causes in 2024. The Russell-Cooke Silicon Cup Regatta returns this September to The Solent for the annual two-day charity event.

The IT industry's biggest charity sailing event presents an exciting opportunity for companies to network with like-minded individuals, while raising money to be divided equally between three deserving charities; The Genie's Wish, The Andrew Simpson Foundation, and Greig City Academy.

Shaun Frohlich, chairman of the Russell-Cooke Silicon Cup Regatta, also said: "We are utterly delighted with the outcomes of last year's event which yielded an impactful £48,000 contribution to our three charities and we are excited to be returning to the water this September and pushing the funds raised even higher.

"Improving the lives of so many across the UK whilst enabling hosts to provide a fantastic and memorable event for their guests is simply an incredible thing."

Over the last 23 years, more than 7,250 competitors have taken part in the regatta, raising a total of £1.15 million to date.

Peter Jeffery, partner at Russell-Cooke Solicitors, the main sponsor, said: "We're thrilled to continue our sponsorship of the regatta for the firm's second year. It's more than just a race; it's an invaluable networking opportunity and chance to raise funds for some really worthy causes."

The 2024 event will take place on Tuesday 17 and Wednesday 18 September. Every eight or ten guest yacht comes with a professional crew, alongside safety gear and a safety briefing on the first day of the event.

The co-founder of The Genie's Wish, Katie Jones said: "The funding we receive as part of this event has been fundamental to our growth and we are so grateful for that.

"With the funding, we have been able to support Mari, an aspiring Paralympian, with a new wheelchair. Last year, she had the opportunity to come to the event and share her story, which helped her gain more experience and confidence in public speaking."

A gala dinner will also be held on the first night at Cowes on the Isle of Wight, with competitions and auctions held to raise money for the chosen charities.

Sally Turner, the partnerships, marketing and communications manager at The Andrew Simpson Foundation said: "The support from the Silicon Cup Regatta has enabled young people to get out on the water, gain accredited qualifications and develop key life skills all through our fantastic charitable programmes.

"The funds raised from last year's Silicon Cup Regatta enabled the ASF to run over 4,600 charitable programme sessions in 2023, benefiting 100s of young people."

Friends get ready to sail around the world from Whitehaven Marina

A GROUP of friends are setting off on the voyage of a lifetime as they prepare to sail around the world from Whitehaven Marina.

Alex Brannan, 26, Robert Middleton, 26, Samuel Middleton, 23, Tom Ramsdale, 22, and Henry James Jones, 19, were due to begin their epic journey yesterday.

About four years ago, Alex and his friends started a YouTube channel called ‘Outside Your Zone’ to encourage people to get out of their comfort zone.

Alex  said: “Our retirement age is 67 and it made me think that isn’t guaranteed at all. We are trying to get the experience now rather than later on in life.

“Over the last three years, we have been saving our money and the idea was to sail around the world.

“We bought a boat last year and we’ve been doing it up over the last six months. Whitehaven was the closest port and easiest for us to access.”

Alex, an accountancy consultant and Robert, a Parcelforce manager, decided to quit their jobs and sell the house they had bought in Carlisle when they were 21.

They moved on to the boat in Whitehaven Marina full time six weeks ago, ready for the trip.

Alex said: “Only two of us have really sailed. We’ve used the last year when we bought the boat to practice. We’ve all got skills in sailing now.

“We have got the next two years planned, to get to New Zealand. It could take up to five years.

“We are going to lots of different countries and are stopping off to explore. That’s why it’s going to take us so long.

I’m most looking forward to going to Italy.”

The group were due to set off from Whitehaven to the Isle of Man, then down to the Isles of Scilly.

They will then split up into two teams after picking up another boat and will do the rest of the journey in convoy, travelling to the Channel Islands and then on to Spain, then to Gibraltar.

2024 RYA Youth National Championships 1st - 5th April 2024

Over 300 of the UK's best young racing talents battled it out in tough conditions at the 2024 RYA Youth National Championships, held at the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy during the Easter break (1-5 April).

The latter half of the week saw strong winds leading to a disrupted schedule, but race management teams made the most of improved conditions when they came, with winners crowned across six classes as iQFOiL windfoilers joined sailors in the 420, Nacra 15, 29er, ILCA 6 and ILCA 7 fleets at the pinnacle youth racing event.

After a successful pilot last year, the event staged Olympic-style medal racing on the final day for the 420 and ILCA 6 male fleets as well as a knockout medal series for the iQFOiL. The iQFOiLers also experienced a mix of slalom and course racing formats for their opening series, although the strong winds put paid to planned sprint races as part of the the 29er fleet's opening series.

"What's great about the RYA Youth Nationals is that, whether you're pushing for the front of the fleet or you're here for the first time, it's a great learning and development opportunity for your sailing," said RYA Youth Racing Manager Oli Woodcock.

"It's been a great week. We've had a mix of conditions, some challenging conditions for everyone whether that was the race officers or the sailors. I've seen some really good courage and determination in these challenging conditions."

"For people for whom it's their first event, hopefully they've had a really good time and have learned a lot about how to sail the different classes," Woodcock continued. "For people that are pushing for medals, hopefully it has given them a chance to practice performing under pressure, getting ready for the internationals in the summer."

Competitors were fortunate to welcome a number of British Sailing Team names throughout the week to help encourage and inspire them.

Full results are available on the RYA Youth Nationals event website.
