Disadvantaged young people have been taking part in a series of sailing days at Girton Sailing Club for the past few months.
The youths, from Aspire Day Services, Lincoln, have been attending every Tuesday since early May, learning about dinghy sailing and other watercraft skills.
They were welcomed by a large volunteer group of experienced sailing club members, including Royal Yachting Association qualified training instructors and safety boat crews.
During this time, they have sailed in a variety of different weather conditions.
When weather conditions were too windy for safety reasons, the group tackled canoe paddling and learned how to use a throwline for rescuing someone in difficulty.
The students worked on the RYA’s Sail Ability training log book, which lists all the basic tasks required to gain their certificates which are in four levels — entry, bronze, silver, and gold.
Some of the young wannabe sailors had little or no experience of boats and some had never been afloat before.
A spokesman from Aspire said sailing at Girton was their client’s “highlight of the week” and they couldn’t wait for the next session.
