Historic boat 'Hearts of Oak' visited Arnside

A HISTORIC 'Morecambe Bay Prawner' built in Ulverston visited Arnside over the weekend of 16-17 July.

Hearts of Oak is a 34-foot-long gaff-rigged wooden vessel built in 1912 by John Randall McLester of Ulverston.

It appeared on a BBC programme back in spring 2019.

In the past the boat has been used as a pilot boat, fishing boat, and air-sea rescue, saving the lives of airmen in World War 2 that had to ditch their aircraft in the Duddon Estuary.

The Hearts of Oak visited Arnside as part of the Arnside Sailing Clubs Regatta Day.

The ship will be joining the Tall Ships Visit in Barrow on Saturday 6 - Sunday 7 August in 2022.

The boat trust that looks after the vessel was formed in 2001.
