Chesil Sailing Trust receives major donation in honour of Rod Shipley

A WOMAN has honoured the memory of her late husband recently making another major donation to the Chesil Sailing Trust.

The Sailing Trust is a Dorset based charity established in 2001 that enables young, disadvantaged or disabled people to enjoy the thrills of sailing and water sports.

The charity has been running taster courses for young people under their ‘Sail for a Fiver’ scheme since 2003, but in 2013 this scheme received a major boost when Elma Shipley made a very substantial donation of £100,000 in memory of her late husband Rod, who had sadly died in 2012.

Her latest donation is in excess of £22,000 bringing the total donated by Mrs Shipley since 2013 to over £200,000.

Mrs Shipley's husband, Rod Shipley, was a popular local businessman who owned Chesil Beach Motors and who had enjoyed sailing since his schooldays. Mrs Shipley therefore felt that an appropriate way of honouring his memory was to give other young people the chance to experience sailing and watersports.

As a result of Mrs Shipley’s support the ‘Rod Shipley Sail for a Fiver’ programme was established, together with a ‘Rod Shipley Windsurf for a Fiver’ scheme which enables young people to experience windsurfing and other board sports. Her further major donation to the Trust enables these programmes to be sustained.
