Sailors are planning to get all lit up this weekend and put plenty of Yo-Hoe-Hoe-Hoe into Plymouth’s Christmas spirit with a spectacular night-time sail past across Plymouth Sound.
A fleet of all sorts of sailing and motor boats will coast across the water from Jennycliff Bay and Mount Batten Breakwater on Sunday December 11, passing close to The Hoe foreshore before turning round at Devil’s Point and retracing its course before repeating the sail-by.
More than 30 craft have already signed up to take part, each of them decked out from stem to stern with festoons of lights, and more are expected to sign up for the parade, which is the first Festival of Boats in Lights to be held in the Sound. It is being organised by the city’s recently reformed Royal Plymouth Corinthian Yacht Club and boat owners from throughout the area are being invited to join in, whether or not they belong to a club.
Organiser Julie Morton, the RPCYC’s vice-commodore, says that anyone with a suitable boat can sign up for the event by registering with the club, which has its headquarters on The Parade in the Barbican.
All proceeds from the £5 sign-on fee are being donated to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and the city’s all-weather 56ft Severn class lifeboat, the Sybil Mullen Glover, will lead the fleet - subject to service needs and not being called out on a shout.
Best places to see the shimmering sailors will be from The Hoe, Madeira Road, Mount Batten Breakwater, and Jennycliff, with the fleet gathering in the bay between 5 and 5.30pm.
The sail-past will last until around 7pm when the boats will disperse to their home moorings.
