Behind the scenes with Sidmouth's popular Sailing Club

Recreational sailing began in Sidmouth in the 1850s. The first Sidmouth Regatta was held in 1857 and the Sailing Club established in 1936. The sailing season is mostly between April and October. The club currently has around 140 members, 60 of whom are sailors, and the rest supporters.

Steve Tyreman, who is a regular safety boat crew member, said: “I've participated in lots of water sports and love getting out on the sea. The club is very friendly and welcoming and has members from all walks of life, including teachers, lawyers, builders and a pig farmer. “

Sidmouth resident Janet Ritchie agreed: “Sailing is such wonderful hobby, it's very calming and mindful.”

It's not necessary for sailors to have their own boat as club boats are available for hire, but they need to have Royal Yachting Association (RHA) Dinghy 1 and 2 level qualification or have their skills assessed by the club before sailing independently. However if someone has no sailing experience but is keen to learn the club will assist them, offering training and the opportunity to help out as crew.

Commodore Barny Croft said: “Sailing is awesome fun, and the club provides a wonderful way in which to explore the sea.”

It's also possible to join Sidmouth Sailing Club as a social member and supporter. The reasons for this vary. Some join because they are family members or friends of sailors, others might be ex-sailors, whilst others just enjoy the atmosphere of the club and its incomparable sea view. The venue is also available for hire for weddings and parties.

New members are always welcome and can find out more at www.sidmouthsailing.org.
