Children enjoy open day at Lyme Regis Sea School

LYME Regis Sea School recently held its first open day, with the opportunity to learn to sail for young people at an affordable price.

More than 60 youngsters – some with experience and some complete beginners – took to the water for a day of training, as well as enjoying a barbecue back at Lyme Regis Sailing Club.

The open day was led by the Sea School’s chief dinghy instructor Ollie Tucker and lead senior instructor Alistair Walsingham, enjoying near perfect sailing conditions – although a little chilly.

Ollie said: “It was great to see so many returning sailors and new faces, who we very much hope to see again in summer!”

Lyme Regis Sea School has been operating for 28 years and is the only sail and powerboat centre in Lyme Regis, offering an expansive program of dinghy courses throughout the summer season.

The school is a charity, replying entirely on grant funding and its own programme of events, and has increased the size of its team to nearly 50 paid and voluntary instructors in the last few years.

Its fleet size has also increased, now using up to five powered craft, 11 double-crewed dinghies and 18 single-crewed dinghies.

Lyme Regis Sea School is now taking booking for six five-day courses running through July and August, as well as its weekly evening sessions through the summer (youth training on Mondays and adult training on Thursdays).
