Southampton preparations underway for global yacht race

The 30,000-mile Ocean Global Race aims to evoke the spirit of the early Whitbread contests and has been running every four years since 1973.

This year’s race will start and finish in Southampton.

On September 10, around 160 sailors aboard 14 yachts will sail off from the city and embark on the adventure taking them around the world for the next seven months.

The city had previously been the starting ground during the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1989/90.

Stop overs will include Cape Town in South Africa, Auckland in New Zealand and Punta del Este in Uruguay, before finishing between April 14-19.

To reflect the effort made by the teams in the 70s, entrants will not use any computers, satellites, or GPS. Instead, they will rely on sextants, leadership, and teamwork.

The public will be able to see the racing yachts leading up to the start of the race at the Ocean Village, Southampton.
