New boat for Pentland Firth Yacht Club thanks to grant support

The Pentland Firth Yacht Club, located in Scrabster, have purchased an essential new racing and safety boat for the upcoming dinghy sailing seasons.

A £10,000 grant from the Baillie Wind Farm Community Benefit Fund and £12,000 from the Highland Community Regeneration Fund has been used to acquire a brand-new Smartliner Cuddy 17, enhancing the club's capabilities for both dinghy racing and safety boat responsibilities.

This is a significant boost for the yacht club, and is vital for safe and fun sailing across all ages and skill levels.

The new vessel will play a crucial role in supporting dinghy events throughout the year while ensuring the safety of participants.

Commodore Donald Mackenzie said: "The new safety boat provides peace of mind as the old safety boat it replaces was becoming unreliable with a few events having had to be cancelled due to it failing to start.

"As the Pentland Firth Yacht Club turned 70 in 2023, the replacement safety boat will see safe sailing continues for many years to come.

With the acquisition of the new safety boat, the club aims to enhance its racing and recreational programme, offering an all-year-round capability for both seasoned sailors and beginners alike.

The club welcomes new members and is eager to expand the community. Sailing sessions are held on Tuesday evenings from 7pm and Sunday afternoons starting at midday, weather dependent.

These sessions provide the perfect opportunity for individuals to learn the ropes of sailing, participate in friendly and competitive races, or simply enjoy the camaraderie of fellow sailors.
