£1m Yacht Club Plan Approved for Yorkshire Sailing Club

The Royal Yorkshire Yacht Club's Plans for a new one million pound club house at Wilsthorpe near Bridlington have been approved.

The new facility will replace the existing club house on the site.

Local residents had expressed concerns over the size of the proposed building which will be around five time larger than the existing building.

The existing clubhouse would be demolished and replaced with the larger structure, as the Royal Yorkshire Yacht Club (RYYC) intend to re-locate their main clubhouse from Windsor Crescent in Bridlington to the application site. This is due to annual maintenance costs and a shortage of available berths in the harbour.

The existing facility at Wilsthorpe is currently the RYYC site for dinghy, dart and catamaran sailing. The club say that the benefits of this site are that sailing is available at all times, whereas in Bridlington, it is restricted due to the changes in the harbour, the tide and no berths being available in the harbour.

The proposed building would be located in a similar location to the existing clubhouse, taking up part of the footprint of the existing building, but extending further to the west of the existing structure. The existing clubhouse has a footprint of 59m sq and the proposed building would be two storey, with a footprint of 302m sq. The building would have a balcony and decked area.

The Wilsthorpe site has hosted international sailing championships successfully in the past that bring people from around the world to the region.

Tim Rix says the new facility will enable the club to grow it's membership and attract more national and international events to the area.
