Bridlington Sailing Coble Festival set to take to the seas on 19-20 July

Final preparations are underway for this year’s highly anticipated Sailing Coble Festival, scheduled for the weekend of 19-20 July in Bridlington.

A large number of visiting cobles are expected to arrive in the next few days leading up to the event, settling into their designated moorings within the Bridlington harbour.

The festival will feature stunning examples from South Shields, Sunderland, Whitby, and Scarborough, alongside the traditional Bridlington sailing cobles that are a staple of the local maritime heritage.

The event promises to be the largest and most prestigious gathering of traditional crafts along the East Yorkshire Coast.

Paul Arro from the Bridlington Sailing Coble Preservation Society (BSCPS) explained:

“An exciting highlight this year will be the arrival of the historic ex-Tynemouth motor/sailing lifeboat, Henry Frederick Swan, which was built in 1917.

“Making her way down from the Tyne, the lifeboat will make a brief stop in Whitby on the evening of 18 July before continuing her journey to Bridlington. The 40-foot lifeboat will join the fleet of cobles on both days of the festival.

“This year’s festival aims to evoke nostalgia for the days when Bridlington harbour was home to a significant fleet of sailing cobles, most of which were constructed locally or in nearby Flamborough.

The event has been made possible thanks to generous financial sponsorship from Henry Boot Construction Limited and the Lord’s Feoffees and Assistants of the Manor of Bridlington, alongside support of the Bridlington Harbour Commissioners.

Bridlington is the place to be for sailing enthusiasts over the weekend of 19-20 July, rubber stamping its status as the sailing coble capital of Great Britain.
