Para Championship trio announces boat supply to all athletes

The RS Venture SCS Para Worlds in Travemünde on 24-26 July, 2.4mr Gold Cup Para World Championship in Warnemünde on 25-29 September, and the Hansa Worlds in Palermo on 2-9 October, will all be able provide chartered boats to sailors competing.

"Providing the boats for our Championship races is the ideal solution during the pandemic, when our athletes are having to make many decisions - including financial ones - before competing, our thanks goes to all the organisers"

In addition to today's news, a Para Development Programme clinic will run before the Hansa Worlds with coaching support continuing during the event. This will provide valuable support to sailors from new and emerging nations.

A fourth event - the Inclusion World Championship for Sailing in Hamburg on 25-29 August - will also be guaranteeing boats with all entries.

RECORD ENTRIES FOR COWES CLASSICS WEEK

A record number of people have signed up to Cowes Classics Week sailing event.

Over 190 yachts will race off Cowes next week (July 5-9), testing their skills over a variety of courses and creating a spectacle for visitors.

Strict adhesion to the on-going COVID regulations has required some amendments to the social program but the organisers, the Royal London Yacht Club, are confident that all competitors and visitors will enjoy a safe and rewarding program of events.

New for 2021 is Cowes Classics Day on Tuesday July 6, during which a large collection of interesting classic cars will assemble on The Parade together with exhibits from the Classic Boat Museum.

On Trinity Landing, just off The Parade, Cowes will be Motor Gun Boat 81, built for war service in 1943 and recently fully restored complete with period gunnery! MGB 81 will be joined by a small selection of smaller classic power boats.

Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the first man to sail single handed non-stop around the world, has entered his famous ketch “Suhaili” for the week’s racing and she will be moored on Trinity Landing when not racing.

Hundreds turn out for Backwater Sailing Club open day

A SAILING club open day has been hailed a huge success as hundreds of visitors enjoyed messing about on the river.

Maldon's Blackwater Sailing Club resurrected the event after last year's open day became a victim of the pandemic.

A spokesman said: "It was a gloriously sunny day and hundreds of visitors arrived.

Maldon's Blackwater Sailing Club resurrected the event after last year's open day became a victim of the pandemic.

Organisers said it was "touch and go" whether the long-awaited crowd-puller would go ahead after lockdown restrictions were extended.

But the club appointed a Covid officer and already had safety measures in place so the show could go on.

A spokesman said: "It was a gloriously sunny day and hundreds of visitors arrived.

"With compulsory check-in points for several areas of the club, the sea air was soon overtaken by the smell of disinfectant and hand gel.

"There were dinghy sailing and row boat trips to be enjoyed on the lake and a steady queue formed for these all day.

"With a one-way system in place, one family group at a time were allowed a glimpse of our superb new club room, sun room and members' galley which make up a large part of our facilities."

River trips were available from mid day with some people going for a lively ride in a Rib, while others opted for the more sedate gentleman's launch.

Anyone who would like to visit the club with a view to joining can email membership-secretary@blackwatersailingclub.org.uk.

King's Lynn-based Ouse Amateur Sailing Club celebrates its 140th anniversary

Founded in 1881 the Ouse Amateur Sailing Club (OASC) has remained open continuously over the last 140 years with racing at its core.

The original ‘Racing Instructions’ included the requirement for yachts/dinghies to be at anchor when the start gun was fired, they hoisted sails, hauled anchors and started the race – things have changed a lot since those days when all racing was done on the river Great Ouse in Lynn.

During the two World Wars when most clubs ceased activities, OASC remained open, acting as an unofficial Officer’s Mess for the Royal Navy who were often in Lynn.

Other groups including Sea Cadets, Scouts and U3A use the club's facilities as they become a more community focused non-powered water sports venue.

OASC welcomes new members and more information can be found on their website at: www.oasc.co.uk or on their Facebook pages.

SB20 World Championships Now Coming to Dublin Bay One Year Earlier

The countdown is now most definitely on for the SB20 World Championships that have been moved from 2023 to 2022 on Dublin Bay.

The Irish hosted World Championships will be held at the National Yacht Club at Dun Laoghaire Harbour from 5-9 Sept 2022.

The change in year 'was due to a number of factors and thankfully Ireland has managed to retain the worlds, albeit one year earlier, " says the Irish class president John Malone.

The planned Worlds in Singapore and the Europeans in St Petersburg, Russia are cancelled and the Netherlands will host the Worlds in 2023.

The 2022 World Championships sees the event return to Dublin Bay some 14 years after the inaugural world championships were sailed at the NYC in 2008.

Hastings sailors have busiest week

Hastings and St Leonards Sailing Club had its busiest week of the season with junior sail trainees out on the water on Tuesday, youth improvers on Thursday, novice racers on Saturday and general club racing on Sunday.

Competitiveness within the novice racers Saturday Afternoon Improvers Link (SAIL) Series has increased as those new to sailing learn how to race and build confidence to push their boats harder.

Stuart Labbett in a Laser continues to lead the series but those chasing him are now much closer on his heels.

WINDELER CUP POSTPONED UNTIL AUGUST TO REDUCE FOOTFALL IN COWES

The Island Sailing Club has decided to postpone the Windeler Cup event to 7th August 2021.

Previously, this Saturday formed part of Cowes Week, with a full day’s racing for the White Group classes, so an ideal time to run the new Windeler Cup and end a great week of sailing for the 13 classes already in Cowes (Daring, Dragon, Etchells, Flying Fifteen, Mermaid, Redwing, Sunbeam, Swallow, Sonar, Squib, RS Elite, Victory and XOD classes).

The course for the Windeler Cup ‘Round the Solent’ race will be published on 6th August taking into account the expected conditions. The race will start from the Royal Yacht Squadron line off Cowes and finish on the ISC line.

It is expected that the start will be at approximately 10.00 and the course will consist of legs of no more than 30 minutes each, so plenty of tactical options and passing opportunities, with a course length of about 4 hours.

Sonars are available to charter from the Island Sailing Club, contact ben@islandsc.org.uk. Current entrants will be informed and moved to the new date. To enter visit https://www.islandsc.org.uk/racing/windeler-cup and entries close on 2nd August 2021.

Community / Sailing charity offers taster sessions for young people on board the Swan

SAIL Training Shetland is offering free taster sessions on board the Swan to all 13 to 23 year olds in preparation for the Tall Ships Races in 2022 and 2023.

The ‘sail training taster days’ will offer the opportunity for young people to experience a day on the restored sail fishing boat and hear more about the opportunities of taking part in the international sailing events which, in the summer of 2023, will come to Lerwick.

The day sails will take place on 28, 29 and 30 July with a new set of trainees each day. The organisation said it was particularly keen attract trainees who have not sailed with Sail Training Shetland before.

Chairman Peter Campbell said the Covid pandemic had cancelled all of the charity’s activities last year.

“However, with the Tall Ships Races coming back to Lerwick in 2023 we felt it was important to start building momentum for the event, as well as enabling young folk to get out on the water around our own shores following a very difficult year,” he said.

“We will also provide the taster experience free of charge, meaning the trainees do not need to provide any funds toward the trip.”

Absolutely no sailing experience is required to take part, just a willingness to pitch in and work as a team. While sail training includes instruction in all aspects of sailing, its purpose goes far beyond this.

It uses the experience of being at sea principally as a means to help young people learn about themselves and to discover hidden strengths and talents. It also builds self-confidence, independence, team working, communication skills and friendships, Sail Training Shetland said.

Trustee of The Swan Trust Tommy Allan said: “With the known mental and physical health benefits sail training brings, we were delighted when restrictions relaxed enough to allow trainees to come onboard again.

“What is on offer this year will help build foundations for 2022 and 2023, and we hope to welcome onboard many of those who take part in the taster days for longer journey in years to come.”

Applications are now open for online submissions via Sail Training Shetland’s website www.sailtrainingshetland.com/

The closing date is Friday 9 July.
