Sailing at the Orkney Island Games 2025 – A Legacy in the Making

With the Orkney Island Games 2025 nearly upon us, we can’t wait to follow the action. Read on for an overview of sailing at this year’s Island Games.

Where & When to Watch the Sailing

Location: Hatston Slip, Kirkwall, Orkney

Dates: Sunday 13 July – Thursday 17 July 2025 (weather dependent)

Classes: ILCA 6 (Laser Radial) and ILCA 7 (Laser Standard)

Format: Up to 10 races per class across the week, with results counting towards individual and team medals

RYA Scotland is thrilled to have played a central role in supporting this year’s sailing competition, having provided 24 brand new ILCA dinghies thanks to financial support from sportscotland.

These boats will not only be raced by some of the best sailors from across the islands in July but will also remain on the island as a lasting legacy for the local community and clubs.

At RYA Scotland, we believe major events like the Island Games are about more than medals - they’re about momentum.

And with the 24 ILCA dinghies used in the Games to remain on Orkney after the event, they're sure to support local clubs in reducing a barrier to participation, allowing more people to get afloat and hone their passion.

Earlier on in the season, the RYA Scotland coach education team were thrilled to deliver a well attended Dinghy instructor Course on Orkney, upskilling and developing the workforce to support a lasting legacy post-Games.
